Sen. Hwang Praises FEMA Ruling on Penfield Pavilion

Fairfield — The Penfield Pavilion reconstruction project got a major boost Wednesday when the Town received word that FEMA will reimburse Fairfield for the full replacement value of the beloved beachfront structure that was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

“Today is a great day for our community,” state Sen. Tony Hwang (R-28) said. “Generations of Fairfielders have created wonderful memories at Penfield Pavilion and I am excited to know that tradition will continue. Now that we have a favorable ruling from FEMA on the level of reimbursement, I hope the Town will move forward full steam ahead to bring this gem of a community asset back to life as soon as possible.”

For the past several months, the level of reimbursement was in question. FEMA had initially determined that the damage to the structure fell short of full replacement, which would have cost the town more money.

The First Selectman’s office reached out for help from federal and state leaders, including Sen. Hwang, and ultimately an independent contractor was assigned to review the town’s application.

“I’d like to offer my appreciation to Congressman Himes, the First Selectman’s Office, state Reps. Brenda Kupchick, Laura Devlin, Cristin McCarthy Vahey, Fairfield’s Representative Town Meeting (RTM), and all town bodies for their leadership and support throughout this process. It really goes to show our ability to work together for the people of Fairfield,” Sen. Hwang added. “The completion of Penfield Pavilion is a critical step in our town’s ongoing recovery effort from the destruction of Superstorm Sandy. I’m looking forward to the day when Fairfielders will once again be able to enjoy it.”
