For Immediate Release

Sen. Republican Leader Stephen Harding, Sen. Heather Somers, Ranking Senator on the Public Health Committee, Sen. Jeff Gordon, a medical doctor who serves on the Public Health Committee, and Sen. Ryan Fazio issued the following statement regarding pro-consumer reforms that are before the Public Health Committee which seek to protect access to affordable healthcare in Connecticut.

“Protecting access to affordable healthcare in Connecticut is neither a Democrat nor a Republican issue. It’s a common sense issue. We have all seen the mismanagement of Manchester, Rockville, and Waterbury hospitals by Prospect Medical Holdings. We must pass policies to improve oversight over healthcare acquisitions while improving access to care, particularly in rural areas. We must reform the Certificate of Need process to reduce barriers to the expansion of access to health care. We must pass policies to boost transparency and to address the unaffordable double-digit health insurance rate hikes we see on a nearly annual basis. There is common ground. We have all been working across the aisle to find common ground on this front and will continue to work for bipartisan solutions to make health care more accessible and affordable for Connecticut families.”
