Thumbs up to state Sen. Tony Hwang for his resolve to reintroduce legislation in the General Assembly to toughen the penalties for violence and threats to schools. His bill, the Zero-Tolerance Safe School Environment Act, passed the Senate during the last legislative session, but never made it to a vote in the House, unfortunately. If the bill were adopted, the consequences would be felony charges against whoever called in threats to Fairfield schools on Friday, forcing the lockdown of all 17 public schools and early dismissal. Not only is there a loss of learning time and unnecessary tie-up of public safety resources, but, worse, threats of violence are frightening to students, teachers and parents. We hope Hwang’s useful bill will gain attention and support in the House next time.
