New Haven Independent Investigation Raises “Red Flags” for CT Senate GOP Lawmakers

November 8, 2024

Sen. Rob Sampson, Sen. Eric Berthel and Sen. Minority Leader Stephen Harding are raising concerns about a New Haven Independent investigation which highlights an organized effort to bring non-citizens to marry as many as 100-plus Americans a month at New Haven City Hall.

“This raises a host of troubling red flags. An experienced immigration attorney who was quoted in the article described it as ‘a classic indicator of marriage fraud.’ So, is he correct? Is anyone investigating it? This story raises serious questions about our broken immigration system and its impact on Connecticut taxpayers. It also calls into question possible abuses of the system which involve non-citizens and potentially vulnerable young women. It merits a thorough review from Connecticut’s Attorney General.”

Connecticut Republicans have questioned how illegal immigration-related policies impact the state. They have raised concerns about the financial impact of the migrant crisis on Connecticut. They have also been critical of Connecticut Democrats for passing a law which greatly restricts local police and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from talking to each other.
