Senate Republican Leader Stephen Harding and House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora issued the following statement regarding the new three-year agreement reached between the Connecticut Personal Care Assistant (PCA) Workforce Council and SEIU District 1199 New England.

“While we appreciate – and support – the great work performed by PCAs, we urge our colleagues in the legislature to consider whether taxpayers can afford to make Connecticut the ‘national leader’ in union compensation for this bargaining unit at a time when we’re trying to strike a balance between fiscal responsibility and providing appropriate funding for critical government services—from educating children to supplying nonprofit providers with money they say they need to address staffing shortages. Aside from just the budgetary concerns related to this package, we fear this deal sets a new floor for future negotiations of state employee contracts that could drive astronomical spending increases over the long-term.”
