CT Open Enrollment: Fast Approaching Deadline & New Options for Pregnant Women
December 12, 2018Now through December 15, Connecticut residents can renew or purchase new health care insurance policies through Access Health CT.
Applying for insurance through the annual Open Enrollment period ensures that you and your family will have coverage in 2019.
While I certainly encourage anyone without health insurance coverage to take advantage of the Open Enrollment period, please also be aware that “qualifying life events” can make you eligible for coverage outside of this window.
Life changes such as getting married or divorced or starting a new job would make a person eligible to obtain health insurance outside of the open enrollment period. This year, there is also a new qualifying life event in Connecticut. Thanks to legislation I introduced and thanks to the bipartisan support it received in the legislature, pregnancy is now a qualifying life event in our state. This means that for the first time, uninsured women can purchase health insurance once they find out they are pregnant, instead of being forced to wait until after their child is born to obtain insurance. This landmark legislation makes Connecticut a leader in women’s health care. It will help ensure expectant mothers get the prenatal care they and their baby need to live healthy lives for years to come, reducing future costs by providing compassionate care at their time of need.
For those who do not have insurance today, I encourage you to visit Access Health CT to learn about the options available to you and apply by December 15, 2018. And for those who may find themselves in unexpected situations in the future, please know Connecticut has made important updates to our laws to give people needed access to health care.
