Republicans Tell Supporters To ‘Light Up Phones’
By Kathleen Megan
Hartford Courant

In a last-ditch effort to influence the state budget, Republicans legislators sent out an email blast to voters asking them to light up the phones of their Democratic colleagues and the governor on Monday morning with a “brief, clear, three word message: ‘No New Taxes!'”

Those supporters did, indeed, launch a barrage of calls to the Senate and House Democrats’ front desks and to the governor’s office.

Dionne Abrams, who was answering the Senate front desk phone, said at midmorning Monday that her phone had been ringing nonstop with folks delivering that message — some in short form, others in a more long-winded style.

“They were basically saying no new taxes and expressing their discontent …” Abrams said.

But it didn’t seem to bother her. Asked if it was annoying, she said: “Not at all, that’s what we’re here for. It comes with the territory.”

The email from the Republicans instructed callers to be “respectful and courteous.”
Gabe Rosenberg, a spokesman for the House Democrats, acknowledged that there had been calls, but “I can tell you without question, it’s [fewer] calls than we got about cuts for social services.”

One GOP insider said in an email that “interestingly the Democrats are forwarding the calls back to GOP. Maybe they don’t want to answer?”
