State Sen. Kevin Kelly, who represents Shelton, is opposed to bringing back tolls on Connecticut highways.

“Tolls are taxes, and we are overtaxed already,” said Kelly, a Republican now serving his third term. “You can help me say ‘no’ to border tolls.”

State legislators are expected to look at the idea of adding tolls, especially with Gov. Dannel P. Malloy unveiling a massive, long-term transportation infrastructure improvement plan that needs funding sources. Placing tolls at certain locations along state borders is one idea being considered.

‘Strong feelings’

On Wednesday, Feb. 25, state legislators will hold a public hearing on a proposal to put up tolls on Connecticut’s borders.

“Many of you have strong feelings about tolls and whether the state of Connecticut should bring them back,” Kelly said. “If you are interested in voicing your opinion by testifying or submitting testimony via email to the legislature, here’s your chance.”

Kelly urged constituents to weigh in on the matter. He said people could send an email to the legislature’s Transportation Committee at [email protected]. In the email’s subject line, put “House Bill 6818″ (that’s the border toll bill’s number).

The email can be as brief as a sender desires, and should include the sender’s name and hometown. Kelly urged people to copy him on the email at [email protected].

Hearing is Wednesday morning

The legislative hearing will take place Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford, and should last all day.

Kelly represents the 21st Senatorial District, which includes all of Shelton as well as parts of Monroe, Seymour and Stratford. He is an attorney and lives in Stratford.
