Statement on Democrat Proposals: “Here we go again!”

February 4, 2019

Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven) released the following statement regarding House and Senate Democrats’ Feb. 4 policy proposals:

“Here we go again! Democrats admitted today that ‘details are still being worked out’ on these proposals. That’s simply reckless and deceptive. Some of these policies may have merit, but we need to see the details. Once those details are made known, I’m interested in knowing how they can be enacted in a way which doesn’t hurt Connecticut businesses. And how much do they cost? And how would they impact people’s paychecks?

“Years of Democrats’ one-party rule drove Connecticut into an economic ditch. Today, Connecticut has positive momentum, thanks to a bipartisan budget which put historic restraints on how state government spends the taxpayers’ money. Those bipartisan reforms are starting to shift the direction of our state and rebuild people’s confidence in Connecticut. The strategy of keeping more money in people’s pockets led to growth and budget surpluses in the General Fund and the Special Transportation Fund.

“We need to be very careful not to pass policies which could obliterate our current economic momentum. We are in a fragile situation now. Every economist is predicting a recession is right around the corner. We have to prepare for the expected downturn now and ready ourselves for even greater challenges on the horizon to avoid the same long-term devastation we saw during the last recession. An onslaught of economic wrecking ball legislation would put Connecticut into freefall.”
