Senator Linares Backs Legislation Naming the Singing Bridge in Westbrook

January 30, 2017

State Senator Art Linares (R-33) today presented testimony to the legislature’s Transportation Committee in support of Proposed House Bill 5573: An Act Naming a Bridge in Westbrook the Singing Bridge. The bill would officially name the more than 90-year-old steel bridge over the Patchogue River.

“The hum created by motorists’ tires as they cross the steel, open-grate bridge deck on Route 1 has become a sentimental signature that is integral to the unique character of this small town,” Sen. Linares said.

The legislation to have the state recognize the name of the structure as the Singing Bridge submitted by Sen. Linares, Representative Devin R. Carney (R-23), and Representative Jesse MacLachlan (R-35).

The original “Singing Bridge” was built in 1925 and replaced with a new, steel deck bridge in the early 2000s. As vehicle pass over the bridge the unique acoustics created by the open-grate steel deck sends a song throughout the area. A prior proposal for a mute, concrete bridge was vehemently opposed by Westbrook residents.

Sen. Linares noted, “To this day, the bridge’s song is so popular that many patrons of restaurants near the bridge choose to dine outside during the warmer months so they can enjoy a serenade with their meals.”

While some residents may question Sen. Linares support of a bill with little consequence for the state’s economy, he said naming the bridge does have a rightful place on the legislative agenda.

“We certainly have important issues – on pensions, on taxes, on the state budget – that must be addressed this session,” Sen. Linares said. “However, we can’t lose sight of some smaller matters that help us recognize and preserve those special attributes that make Connecticut such a great place to live. The Singing Bridge is important to the people of Westbrook. It deserves to have a state-recognized name.”

Sen. Linares represents the communities of Chester, Clinton, Colchester, Deep River, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Lyme, Old Saybrook, Portland and Westbrook.
