Bridge Dedication Honors Late Watertown Veteran

The bridge over Steele Brook on Riverside Street, adjacent to the Oakville Green, has been dedicated in honor of Art Schreier as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge.

On Dec. 7, Sen. Rob Kane joined local veterans to dedicate the bridge over Steele Brook on Riverside Street, adjacent to the Oakville Green, in honor of Art Schreier as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge.

Schreier, a U.S. Navy veteran who served from 1940 to 1946, survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor 72 years ago. Schreier died in November 2011 at the age of 89.

Sen. Kane thanked Art Atwood Jr., vice president of the men’s auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7330 in Oakville, for his work in helping to dedicate the bridge in honor of Schreier. Sen. Kane, along with Rep. Sean Williams, submitted a bill in the state legislature to rename the bridge and got the bill passed into law.

“Watertown has always been respectful in honoring its veterans,” Sen. Kane said. “It was a proud day for the town.”
