Southington Man Recognized for Part in ‘Wings to Freedom’ Tour

Walter Hushak, the World War II veteran who helped bring the tour to town, gets a special citation.

The B-17, B-24 and P-51, planes that became synonymous with freedom for their heroic flights during World War II, landed in Oxford this weekend, another safe ride led by Southington resident Walter Hushak.

And the man who helped make it all possible, Hushak, got a special citation. The World War II veteran was presented with a proclamation from Oxford First Selectman George Temple, state Sen. Rob Kane and state Rep. Dave Labriola, as well as Kane’s son, Aiden.

The full text of the proclamation follows:

By the Honorable George R. Temple, First Selectman:

WHEREAS, Walter Hushak has graced the Town of Oxford with the Wings of Freedom Tour; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Oxford and its surrounding communities have enjoyed the nostalgic and authentic aircraft presented; and

WHEREAS, the tour has been a reminder to all of the sacrifice made by the men and women of the armed forces in defense of our country;

NOW, THEREFORE, we proclaim, with gratitude, that September 7, 2013 be known as WALTER HUSHAK DAY in the Town of Oxford to be enjoyed by all in commemoration of all veterans and especially veterans of the Army Air Corp.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the Town of Oxford to be affixed on this 8th day of September, 2013.
