“The unchecked proliferation of AI-generated pornography poses a grave threat to individual privacy, mental well-being, and societal trust,” Somers and Harding said. “To safeguard the rights and dignity of women, it is imperative to enact comprehensive legislation that holds creators of non-consensual explicit content accountable. By doing so, we affirm our commitment to protecting individuals from digital exploitation and upholding the ethical standards of our society.”

False images that were spread on the internet of singer Taylor Swift made national headlines. Sen. Somers said she has experienced first-hand how artificial intelligence can be used to infringe on personal privacy. She worked to develop the legislation to make it a crime to disseminate AI-generated intimate images without the knowledge or consent of the person being depicted.

The lawmakers said they are concerned about young girls whose photos could be distorted and sexualized with AI, then circulated on the internet by the people who create them.

The measure requires approval by the full Senate and House of Representatives.
