HARTFORD, CT — Senator Tony Hwang (R—Fairfield) applauds Governor Ned Lamont’s announcement that the state of Connecticut will be granting $8,000 each to the municipalities of Easton and Bethel for the maintenance and restoration of neglected cemeteries in these communities. The grants, totaling $8,000 for each town, are being awarded under the Neglected Cemetery Account Grant Program, administered by the Connecticut Office of Policy and Management (OPM).
“I commend Governor Lamont for his continued commitment to preserving our state’s rich history and cultural heritage through these cemetery restoration grants,” said Senator Hwang. “Easton and Bethel will greatly benefit from these funds, allowing local leaders to address the needs of historic cemeteries and ensure they are maintained in a way that honors those who have passed.”
The allowable uses for the grant funds include activities such as:
- • Clearing weeds, briars, and bushes
• Mowing of lawn areas
• Repairing or restoring fences and walls
• Straightening, repairing, or restoring memorial stones
Senator Hwang emphasized that the preservation of historic cemeteries is an important part of maintaining the legacy of Connecticut’s communities and ensuring these sacred spaces remain dignified and accessible.
“I am proud to see Easton and Bethel receive this much-needed support, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact these grants will have on both towns. It is critical that we protect these important landmarks for future generations,” said Senator Hwang.
The funds will be distributed by the Connecticut Office of Policy and Management, which oversees the Neglected Cemetery Account Grant Program, designed to provide financial assistance for the care and maintenance of cemeteries across the state.
