EASTON, CT – Senator Tony Hwang (R–Fairfield) hosted a press conference to applaud the authorization of $1 million in state bond funding for the long-awaited expansion and renovation of the Easton Public Library. This critical investment highlights the vital role libraries play as hubs of learning, community engagement, and civic involvement.

“Libraries like Easton’s are the heart and soul of our communities,” Senator Hwang said. “This renovation is not just about upgrading infrastructure – it’s about reaffirming our commitment to the public good. It’s about creating a space where future generations can explore, learn, and connect. The Easton Public Library isn’t just a place to borrow books; it’s a trusted institution that fosters education, curiosity, and community. I’m thrilled that this project is moving forward with strong support from the state, the town, and the library itself.”

The idea for the renovation dates back to 2017, when the town established a building committee and hired an architectural firm to design a children’s expansion space that would encourage play, learning, and creativity. “I’m excited that we’ll also be adding two private study rooms as part of this project to meet the growing demand for quiet study spaces,” said Easton Town Librarian Lynn Zaffino. “The increased use of our study pod after the pandemic highlighted the need for this. These improvements will ensure we can better serve our community. I want to thank Deborah Schander, Senator Hwang, the entire delegation, and the library board and staff. This project has involved countless hours of planning and dedication, and I am deeply grateful for the support and hard work of everyone involved.”

State Librarian Deborah Schander emphasized the importance of such projects: “For over twenty years, Connecticut has supported local libraries through construction grants. What makes this program so special is that it’s not just about building a library – it’s about building the library a specific community needs for its residents. Part of the process that we go through each year is asking ‘did you talk to your community? Did you talk to the people who use the library?’ The focus on children, families, and the future of Easton’s library is what makes this project truly exceptional.”

The $1 million in state funding will be matched by contributions from the Town of Easton and the Easton Public Library, providing full funding for the renovation and expansion. These upgrades will modernize library spaces, enhance services, and meet the evolving needs of Easton residents of all ages.

Easton First Selectman David Bindleglass highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project. “This has been a real team effort—from all the committee work that the library folks started to the hard work of Lynn Zaffino for the last almost six years and her staff, all of whom do a phenomenal job here. It is a great library, facility, and service for the town, which is very much recognized by all of us. This will be a great addition,” he said “that these projects are never easy, looking forward to rolling up our sleeves [to] make it happen. Thanks again to everyone!”

Senator Hwang closed by acknowledging the contributions of local leaders. “I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Lynn Zaffino, the Library Board of Trustees, and the Library Building Committee for their vision and dedication. Their hard work has made this project a reality.”

This investment, a partnership between state and local entities, underscores the importance of libraries as cornerstones of community life. Libraries are places where people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances come together to learn, grow, and connect.
