“Priorities”: Senate GOP Statement on Special Ed $$ Appropriations Vote
April 23, 2025

Sen. Heather Somers, Sen. Jeff Gordon and Sen. Stephen Harding today issued the following statement regarding their vote in the Appropriations Committee to double the state grant for special education while offsetting those new funds with a corresponding reduction for higher education.
“Budgets are about priorities.
Senate Republicans support more funding – full funding – for special education services in our municipalities.
This helps not only students, families and teachers, but it also helps every property taxpayer in Connecticut.
It helps every city and town in Connecticut to keep property taxes in check.
Meanwhile, the state university system is sitting on a whopping, more than $611 million, savings account.
Meanwhile, UConn and chronically financially challenged UConn Health stand to receive tens of millions more in budgetary block grants.
This was a vote today in favor of the public school children of Connecticut and the overburdened property taxpayers of Connecticut.”
