Sen. Heather Somers and Sen. Henri Martin today issued the following statement regarding a contractor wanting $35 million to close out the State Pier project. A wall where ships dock was built at the wrong angle and could lead to ships and the wall being damaged. “Does anyone remember when this was ‘merely’ a $93 million project? We do.

Its price tag is now three times that amount, approaching a third of a billion dollars.

Meanwhile, the wind energy industry – which this project serves – has stalled.

Other than that, everything’s fine.

This latest revelation raises new questions.

Shouldn’t the private contractors’ bonds be tapped to remedy these errors?

Why should state taxpayers be on the hook for poor construction or poor design work?”
