February 27, 2025

HARTFORD, CT – Senator Heather Somers (R-Groton), Ranking Member of the Public Health Committee, expressed her continued support for raising awareness around heart health and the importance of access to early detection tools like the Coronary Calcium Scan. Her efforts last legislative session to pass a bill expanding coverage for this vital diagnostic tool are already making a difference in the lives of Connecticut residents.
Senator Somers, who led the successful charge to introduce and pass legislation to expand insurance coverage for the Coronary Calcium Scan, highlighted the critical role early detection plays in preventing heart disease. This non-invasive CT scan detects calcium deposits in the heart arteries, helping identify potential heart disease risks before symptoms emerge. Early intervention can prevent serious heart conditions, saving lives and reducing healthcare costs.
“Passing the Coronary Calcium Scan bill last session was a significant victory for heart health in Connecticut,” Senator Somers said. “I am proud to have been part of the effort to expand coverage for this important tool, which allows for the early detection of heart disease—often before symptoms even appear. This test has the potential to save countless lives by identifying heart issues in their earliest stages.”
“Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in our state and across the nation,” she continued. “Too many people don’t realize they’re at risk until it’s too late. By expanding coverage for this non-invasive test, we are providing a critical tool for prevention that can help reduce the devastating impact of heart disease on families and communities.”
Senator Somers expressed her appreciation for the continued work to raise awareness about heart health, particularly during Heart Awareness Month. She acknowledged the ongoing efforts to ensure that Connecticut residents have access to the resources and support they need to take charge of their heart health.
“I’m encouraged to see my colleagues continue to advocate for the importance of heart disease prevention and awareness,” Senator Somers said. “Together, we can ensure that more people have access to lifesaving screenings like the Coronary Calcium Scan and reduce the burden of heart disease in our state.”
As a key figure in the passage of the Coronary Calcium Scan legislation, Senator Somers remains committed to ensuring that heart health is a priority for Connecticut. She concluded, “By embracing early detection tools and expanding coverage for these services, we are helping to create a healthier, safer Connecticut. I look forward to continuing this important work with my colleagues in the legislature.”
