CT Senate GOP on New CT Cost of Living Crisis Survey: “A Wake-Up Call”

December 2, 2024

The CT Senate Republican Caucus today issued the following statement regarding a new survey from the non-profit DataHaven which found that 40% of CT adults are struggling financially or ‘just getting by’ and that more people report being worse off financially than they were a year ago.

“Wherever we go, Connecticut Republicans hear this same troubling message loud and clear from working and middle class families.

From groceries and electric bills to insurance and housing, Connecticut is becoming increasingly unaffordable.

Unfortunately, Democrats – who control all levers of power at the State Capitol – have no sense of urgency to address the cost of living crisis.

Democrats have already refused to go into special session to take swift action on lowering energy costs. They mocked the very thought of doing so, even as 68,000 people across our state signed a petition urging them to act.

Democrats have refused to eliminate onerous taxes like the truck tax which increase our grocery bills.

Democrats continue to tout the anti-consumer choice and job-crushing electric vehicle mandate. Democrats rejected the Senate Republican plan to retroactively reduce the state income tax for the middle-class.

Democrats also said no to our plan for a $2,000 per child tax deduction and to nearly double access to the $300 property tax credit.

Democrats want to raise taxes next year.

And Democrats also want to expand free health care for undocumented immigrants as struggling Connecticut families who are legal citizens are barely scraping by.

Every issue the state legislature debates in the 2025 must focus on one word: Affordability.

Because right now, as this survey clearly reveals, Connecticut is trending in the wrong direction.

What will majority Democrats at the State Capitol do about it?

This survey must serve as a wake-up call to all state Democrat elected officials.

Republicans hear the alarm bell. Democrats don’t.”
