Sen. Sampson Responds to Democrats’ Continued Defiance of Immigration Laws
November 20, 2024State Sen. Rob Sampson (R-Wolcott) today responded to state and local Democrat leaders’ latest public defiance of immigration law:
“On Monday, a number of high-ranking and prominent elected Democrats held a rally at the state capitol vowing to defy the incoming Trump administration’s efforts to secure our nation’s borders and enforce our national immigration laws—laws that already exist and that are designed to protect American citizens from criminals, gangs, human trafficking, sex trafficking, drug trafficking, terrorism, and violence.
“You’ve probably heard that Connecticut is a sanctuary state—but what does that mean? It means our state laws prevent local and state law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration officials, actively protecting illegal immigrants. Worse, I have described Connecticut as a ‘super sanctuary state’ because laws passed by Democrats on party lines in 2019 removed exceptions for criminal aliens, gang members, and those on terror watch lists. Yes, Democrats have made criminal aliens effectively above the law in our state.
“I’ve been the loudest voice against these dangerous, misguided, and unconstitutional policies and will continue to fight tirelessly to reverse them.
“We are a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of laws. Let’s secure our borders and enforce our current immigration laws. This will properly put American citizens first—and even allow for more lawful immigration,” he said.
