Sen. Hwang Statement on Route 8 Wrong-Way Driver Hitting State Trooper’s Cruiser

November 15, 2024

Sen. Tony Hwang, Ranking Senator on the Transportation Committee, today issued the following statement regarding a state trooper’s cruiser that was hit by a wrong-way driver on Route 8 in Harwinton.

“Thank God no one was seriously hurt. This could have been yet another horrible tragedy on our roadways. It highlights the ongoing need to review our efforts to make our roads safer.

The upgrades of more than 230 ‘high-risk’ highway off-ramps continue. We passed the bipartisan ‘Vision Zero’ safety law and wrong-way driving prevention legislation, but we must keep moving the safety needle.

While a tragedy was avoided in this case, we clearly still have much more work to do to ensure safety on our roadways for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. That includes focusing on distracted and reckless driving, as well as focusing on driver impairment by alcohol, marijuana and other substances.”
