Sen. Gordon Applauds Investments in Area State Parks
October 23, 2024State Bond Commission approves funding for Natchaug and James L. Goodwin state forests’ infrastructure and resiliency
State Sen. Jeff Gordon (R-Woodstock), a member of the legislature’s Appropriations Committee, applauded the State Bond Commission’s approval of funding for Natchaug State Forest and the James L. Goodwin State Forest infrastructure and resiliency projects. The state forests span large swaths of both Hampton and Eastford.
“Thank you to the legislature for authorizing this funding and to Governor Lamont and the Bond Commission for their approval. This aid will help to protect our area’s natural resources and ensure their viability for years to come. So many people in our district utilize these state forests for recreation, and the forests are also a key attraction that brings visitors to our towns. This investment is also an investment in the quality of life in our area,” said Senator Gordon.
The projects and related funding are as follows:
- Natchaug State Forest (Hampton/Eastford): Estimated $78,000 for road resurfacing and drainage to facilitate public, administrative, and emergency access to thousands of acres of Natchaug State Forest and to reduce sedimentation of waterways.
- Natchaug State Forest (Eastford): Estimated $75,000 to repair the forest headquarters roof to address structural deficiencies and install new metal roofing and arresters for lightning strikes.
- James L. Goodwin State Forest/Natchaug State Forest (Hampton): Estimated $33,000 for invasive plant control.
- James L. Goodwin State Forest: Estimated $46,000 (COMPLETED) for museum and garage roof replacements. Both buildings are critical to Goodwin’s operation for education and grounds maintenance. Completing this project will protect the integrity of these structures.
Following yesterday’s approval, the funds can now be allocated.
