CT Senate GOP Will Seek to Improve New Vets Law

October 1, 2024

Sen. Jeff Gordon, Ranking Senator on the Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, Sen. Henri Martin, Ranking Senator on the Finance Revenue and Bonding Committee, and Sen. Stephen Harding today issued the following statement regarding a new Connecticut law taking effect today (Oct. 1) that establishes a property tax exemption for veterans who have a service-connected permanent and total disability rating.

“Connecticut veterans are raising legitimate concerns about this well-intentioned new law. Republicans are listening. The exemption has been interpreted by some municipal assessors as applying to the dwelling, but not the land the dwelling sits on. From the beginning of this proposal, the legislative intent has always been to include both. Veterans are urging lawmakers to refine and clarify the wording of the law to explicitly include dwelling and land. In the next legislative session, we will work to improve this law in order to address veterans’ concerns. We thank Connecticut’s veterans for highlighting this issue, and we will seek to garner bipartisan support for these positive potential changes.”
