Sen. Harding: “We must have no tolerance” for school threats
September 20, 2024(Hearst CT)
At least three Connecticut school districts were keeping students out of class Friday, just weeks into the school year, as a nationwide surge in threats directed at schools continued to cause alarm.
Bridgeport, Bristol and Torrington schools all were closed Friday, officials confirmed.
So far, more than two-dozen schools said they had increased security, closed or announced delays and early dismissals in response to the threats spread on social media.
Aggravation with the school threats appeared also to have extended to the state legislature.
“These school threats cause turmoil, trauma and major disruption in our communities,” said state Sen. Stephen Harding, R-30th District, in a statement issued through a spokesperson. “From Torrington to New Milford to Litchfield and throughout Connecticut, we must have no tolerance for these devastating crimes.”
“These are not ‘pranks.’ These are felonies,” he added. “You will face stiff punishment and prison time if you are caught threatening a school. Don’t even think about it. That blunt and clear message must be sent throughout our state.”
