Sen. Harding Calls for Accountability Regarding School Threats
September 20, 2024(Hartford Courant)
Bristol Public Schools were closed Friday after a social media post described a threat of a school shooting at both high schools.
Bridgeport and Torrington canceled classes as well.
Torrington Public Schools closed schools on Friday after previously stating that the district would be adding extra security.
“Torrington Police are aware of the numerous posts circulating on various social media platforms implying or threatening violence at schools in Connecticut,” Michael Wilson, superintendent of Torrington Public School, said in a statement earlier on Thursday night. “To date, no investigating agencies have reported any credible threats. We are aware of a post referencing a nearby school and we are assisting the Connecticut State Police with that investigation.
“We continue to work closely with all Torrington schools to ensure a safe environment for students and staff. Extra police presence at schools can be expected in the coming days.”
Later Thursday, Wilson said that, despite the threat still being deemed not credible, “we are understanding of the emotional stress that something like this has placed on our families and our community. Therefore, in an overabundance of caution, Torrington Public Schools will be closed (Friday).”
Since the beginning of the academic year, schools in Connecticut have been plagued by social media threats that have prompted numerous districts to add extra police presence. They have also led some schools to temporarily evacuate, while others chose to close for the day.
Earlier Thursday, White sent a message to parents and guardians asking that they help monitor their child’s social media accounts.
“As we endeavor to create a safe and supportive environment for our students, we kindly ask for your assistance in monitoring their social media posts,” White wrote.
“Engaging with your children about their online presence can help promote positive interactions and ensure they are making responsible choices. Your support is invaluable in fostering a respectful and safe online community. Thank you for your partnership in this important matter.”
State Sen. Stephen Harding, who represents several towns impacted by the recent school threats, issued a statement on Friday asking for accountability.
“These school threats cause turmoil, trauma and major disruption in our communities,” Harding said. “From Torrington to New Milford to Litchfield and throughout Connecticut, we must have no tolerance for these devastating crimes. These are not ‘pranks’. These are felonies. You will face stiff punishment and prison time if you are caught threatening a school. Don’t even think about it. That blunt and clear message must be sent throughout our state.”
