Sen. Seminara meets with grandparents who are raising their grandchildren
Sen. Lisa Seminara, Ranking Senator on the legislature’s Aging Committee and the Committee on Children, recently met with area grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.
The Sep. 17 meeting at the Plainville Senior Center focused on the challenges grandparents face in raising grandchildren as well as ideas on how to strengthen public policies to address those challenges.
“This was a wonderful opportunity to hear from those who very often have been thrusted into the unexpected situation of caring for a child or young adult in the later years of their lives,” Sen. Seminara said. “It was my pleasure to share the latest legislation passed at the State Capitol. We discussed federal and state benefits programs which can help with income, food, healthcare, home energy, telephone and other needs for those who are eligible.
“It was a lively exchange where grandparents in attendance were able to share their struggles. They provided me with ideas on how we can improve policies at the state level in the future.
“I specifically thanked the grandparents for stepping up. Taking care of a child as an older adult is no easy task. If a child cannot have their parent, having a loving grandparent is certainly an excellent alternative.”
