Senator Hwang Statement on Historic Flooding in Newtown and Sandy Hook

August 19, 2024

State Senator Tony Hwang (R-28th Senate District, Newtown) issued the following statement regarding the storm flooding that has impacted Newtown and Sandy Hook, specifically Route 34 near Stevenson Dam and the Pootatuck River:

“With yesterday’s severe weather resulting in significant flash flooding, I want to express my deepest concern for our community. The heavy rains have caused considerable damage to roadways and properties, and the situation remains critical.

“I am actively coordinating with local municipal and emergency service officials to fully understand the extent of the damage and to determine what state resources may be necessary to support our towns. I am also working with my legislative colleagues to seek a federal designation of emergency for our damaged communities. For those in immediate danger, please call 911 right away. For non-emergency assistance, contact your local police department.

“I have made myself readily available to support and assist town leaders and emergency response teams to monitor the fast-changing situation closely. Our top priority is ensuring the safety of all residents. Please take all necessary precautions and stay safe.”
