Sens. Harding & Cicarella Statement on Repeated CT Police Car Ramming Incidents
July 1, 2024Sen. Republican Leader Stephen Harding and Sen. Paul Cicarella, Ranking Senator on the Public Safety and Security Committee issued the following statement in reaction to multiple incidents of police cruisers being intentionally rammed by vehicles in recent days.
“This lawlessness – police cruisers getting repeatedly rammed – is outrageous and unacceptable. These potentially deadly attacks on Connecticut law enforcement must be swiftly dealt with. Senate Republicans will lead the push for stronger criminal penalties. We must do more to help protect our police officers and to make our state safer. Republicans have repeatedly spoken with law enforcement about the recent increase in this reckless criminal behavior, particularly in instances involving stolen vehicles. We must also consider the astonishingly high cost for the state and municipalities – for we, the taxpayers – to cover the cost of the damages and replacements of these vehicles. We will work closely with law enforcement to toughen our criminal laws and hold perpetrators of violence accountable for their life-endangering actions.”
