Senate GOP Caucus Slams “one of the most irresponsible pieces of legislation we have ever seen”

May 7, 2024

Sen. Republican Leader Stephen Harding and the entire Senate Republican Caucus today issued the following statement regarding Democrats’ passage of a bill that mandates mom and pop businesses in Connecticut to provide paid sick leave to employees.

“This is one of the most irresponsible pieces of legislation we have ever seen passed by majority Democrats. This is completely tone deaf. Rather than nurturing our small mom and pop businesses, this onerous mandate does just the opposite. It will hurt employers and employees by eliminating their ability to negotiate employment terms themselves. This is Big Government forcing the engines of our economy to comply. Every Democrat who voted ‘yes’ has just added to our state’s reputation of being a bad state for business.

“We Republicans ran for office to help small businesses grow and thrive. Now that all Senate Republicans have voted ‘no’, we will go back to the small business owners of our districts – the family businesses and the mom and pop shops – to let them know that Republicans listened to them and that Republicans will continue to be their voice at the State Capitol.”
