Watch | Paid sick leave, addressing crime continue to be a priority for lawmakers (WFSB)

April 18, 2024

From Eyewitness News:

Paid sick leave for all Connecticut employees and addressing crime are priorities for lawmakers this year.

There’s been a lot of talk this session about paid sick leave. Right now, only companies with 50 employees or more must give paid sick time.

This new bill will require it for all companies.

Another priority this year is dealing with crime, especially car thefts and street takeovers.

Legislation passed in the house Wednesday which creates tougher fines. It allows police to confiscate vehicles and even suspend someone’s driver’s license if they have been convicted three times.

As for car thefts, national statistics show they’re up 30-percent in Connecticut.

“I’ve talked to juvenile probation officers, they say they have clients who have stolen 6 cars, gotten caught and there are no consequences, what are we doing for that child?” said Sen. Paul Cicarella (R-Public Safety Committee).

Republicans said there should be tougher consequences and more programs.
