State Senator Heather Somers Receives Multiple Prestigious Awards for Mental Health Advocacy and Exceptional Leadership

HARTFORD, CT– State Senator Heather Somers (R-Groton), Ranking Member of the Public Health Committee, has been honored with several notable awards for her diligent efforts in mental health advocacy and outstanding leadership. These include:
  • 2023 Mental Health Legislative Champion | Mental Health America
  • 2023 Mental Health Champion | Connecticut Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Outstanding Leadership Protecting Patients in Connecticut | Radiologist Society of Connecticut
  • 2023 Physician & Patient Advocate Award | Connecticut College of Emergency Services
“I would like to express my gratitude to the organizations for their recognition and the tireless work they do every day. With the upcoming legislative session on the horizon, I eagerly look forward to continuing my work in championing mental health, healthcare accessibility, and patient advocacy,” Senator Somers said.
Senator Somers’ commitment to mental health policy advocacy earned her the title of “2023 Mental Health Legislative Champion” by Mental Health America (MHA). This national leadership award recognizes her contributions in addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting overall mental health for everyone. MHA is the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to mental health.
In addition to the MHA award, Senator Somers has been named a “2023 Mental Health Champion” by the Connecticut Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (CTAMFT). CTAMFT, an organization committed to enhancing the delivery of marriage and family therapy, recognizes Senator Somers for her outstanding leadership in protecting patients in Connecticut. Her contributions have proven instrumental in promoting a healthier and more supportive environment for individuals, couples, families, and groups.
Senator Somers also has been acknowledged by the Radiologist Society of Connecticut for her leadership in safeguarding patients during breast cancer awareness month. This recognition reflects her support for the radiologists’ life-saving work, which plays a crucial role in the well-being of individuals across the state.
Senator Somers was awarded the “2023 Physician & Patient Advocate Award” by the Connecticut College of Emergency Services. This recognition highlights her work and leadership on the Public Health Committee. Senator Somers acknowledges the dedication and sacrifices made by emergency room professionals and remains committed to serving the community by ensuring access to quality care for every individual in Connecticut.
