Stratford’s Ruby & Calvin Fletcher African American History Museum Accepted to the Connecticut Freedom Trail
Stratford, CT – Today, Connecticut Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford) joined fellow elected officials, community members, and the State Historic Preservation Office’s Connecticut Freedom Trail Committee in honoring the Ruby & Calvin Fletcher African American History Museum for its acceptance to the Connecticut Freedom Trail.
Sen. Kelly said, “The Ruby & Calvin Fletcher Museum is a fabulous resource in our community, which brings needed and important viewpoints to the fabric of our town. Anyone who visits this museum will leave enriched and with a deeper understanding of African American history in our country. The museum tells a story of our nation’s past that adds more voices and perspectives to the collective conversation. Congratulations to the Fletcher family for the museum’s acceptance to the Connecticut Freedom Trail. This is a distinguished designation, which highlights the importance of honoring the experiences and contributions of African Americans to our country’s history.”
The Ruby & Calvin Fletcher African American History Museum is the first of its kind in Connecticut. The museum provides an immersive experience that tells the history, experiences, and untold stories of African Americans. The museum is a beloved staple in the Stratford community, Greater Fairfield County, and throughout the state, which provides important perspectives of African Americans that need to be included in our country’s history. The bi-partisan efforts locally and statewide have provided support for this important historic museum.
Executive Director Jeffrey Fletcher said, “On behalf of the Ruby & Calvin Fletcher African American History Museum. We would like to thank The Town of Stratford and the Connecticut Freedom Trail for this great honor bestowed upon us.”
Mayor Laura R. Hoydick said, “We are very blessed to have the Ruby & Calvin Fletcher African American History Museum as part of Stratford, and I commend Jeffrey Fletcher on his commitment to curating a museum that recognizes and strives to educate and remind people of our past, regardless of how difficult it may be to face at times. Having the museum be added to the Connecticut Freedom Trail is a tremendous honor and very much well-deserved. Stratford is rich in history, from local to national, and we are proud to have this designation. We look forward to seeing what Jeffrey has in store next, and I encourage everyone to experience his and his family’s museum.”
Representative Joe Gresko said, “Receiving the Freedom Trail designation is another step forward in making this museum a must-see for Connecticut residents. Stratford is fortunate to have the Fletcher Museum.”
