Shelton’s Jones Family Farm & Winery Receives Prestigious Leopold Conservation Award

Shelton, CT – Connecticut Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford) joined fellow elected officials, agricultural industry leaders, and community members on October 4, 2023, for an evening to honor and celebrate the Jones Family Farm & Winery for receiving the Sand County Foundation’s prestigious Leopold Conservation Award. The coveted agricultural award “recognizes and celebrates extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation by agricultural landowners.”

The Jones Family Farm & Winery is a beloved family-owned business and agricultural staple in Connecticut that has farmed its lands in Shelton for over 150 years. The Jones Family believes in sustainable farming and providing high-quality crops to surrounding communities.

Sen. Kelly said, “Congratulations to Terry and the entire Jones Family for all they’ve done for our great state of Connecticut. As said by founder Philip James Jones, “Be good to the land, and the land will be good to you.” I firmly believe this saying not only applies to the land but that by being good to others, they will also be good to you. The Jones Family is a great example of this sentiment. The General Assembly is proud to have the Jones Family Farm in Connecticut and is grateful to Terry Jones for working with each of us to help inform what we are doing as legislators to benefit others throughout the state.”

Terry Jones said, “My family and I are most honored to receive the Leopold Conservation Award. My dream is not only for our City of Shelton, but for all communities to work together to protect the precious farm, forests, and waters of Connecticut. We must come together and work with ‘fierce cooperation’ to protect our natural resources. The Jones family was touched by Senator Kelly’s kind and inspiring remarks at the award ceremony.”

About the Jones Family Farm & Winery:

“Jones Family Farms, nestled in the White Hills of Shelton, with its 19th-century dairy barn and homestead farmhouse, impresses the visitor as a peaceful and relaxed living environment. The beautiful countryside with its orderly rows of Christmas trees, neat stonewalls, and well-maintained fields are the result of efforts by seven generations of Jones family farmers.” – Jones Family Farm & Winery

About the Leopold Conservation Award:

“The award program widely shares the stories of these conservation-minded farmers, ranchers, and forestland owners to inspire countless other landowners to embrace opportunities to improve soil health, water resources, and wildlife habitat on their working land. Finally, the program builds bridges between agriculture, government, environmental organizations, industry, and academia to advance the cause of environmental improvement on private land.” – The Sand County Foundation

*Sen. Kelly represents the 21st District of Stratford, Shelton, Seymour, and Monroe.
