Shelton to Receive $500,000 in STEAP Funding for Upgrades to Community Sports Fields

Shelton, CT – Connecticut Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford), State Representative Ben McGorty (R-122), and State Representative Jason Perillo (R-113) applaud Governor Lamont for releasing state grants through the Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) for towns across Connecticut. The funding will be used to complete a variety of infrastructure improvements, such as road safety reconstruction projects, sewer and drainage upgrades, sidewalk and pedestrian safety enhancements, recreational facility upgrades, and other capital improvement projects. The City of Shelton will receive $500,000 in state funding for upgrades to sports fields, matched by $523,100 in City funds.

Sen. Kelly said, “Improvements to the fields are a direct investment in our youth and residents of all ages. These funds will boost the quality of life in Shelton while making the fields safer and more accessible. A team effort made these funds a reality.”

Rep. McGorty said, “Great news for Shelton! This investment in our town’s athletic fields and facilities will help shape our community for generations,” Rep. McGorty said. “This highlights the importance of athletics and physical fitness for children and families and will give them a renovated place to grow and compete. Thank you to Governor Lamont and his team for their consideration of this project and for Shelton’s dedicated local and state leaders for making it happen.”

Rep. Perillo said, “I am proud to join the governor in celebrating the newly approved STEAP grants and their positive impact on our hometown. Thanks to this funding, Shelton can confidently make improvements in local athletic and recreational resources, investing in our youth through expanded after-school opportunities. I look forward to seeing our youth, families, and entire community benefit from the STEAP program!”

The grant is provided through the Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP), a state program managed by the Office of Policy and Management (OPM) that delivers grants to small towns for economic development, community conservation, and quality-of-life capital projects.

*Sen. Kelly represents the 21st District of Stratford, Shelton, Seymour, and Monroe.
