Monroe to Receive $500,000 in STEAP Funding for Upgrades to Animal Control Facility

Monroe, CT – Connecticut Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford) and State Representative Tony Scott (R-112) applaud Governor Lamont for releasing state grants through the Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) for towns across Connecticut. The funding will be used to complete a variety of infrastructure improvements, such as road safety reconstruction projects, sewer and drainage upgrades, sidewalk and pedestrian safety enhancements, recreational facility upgrades, and other capital improvement projects.

The Town of Monroe will receive $500,000 in state funding for upgrades and expansion of its animal control facility. This will be matched by $384,083 in town funds. The animal control facility “is responsible for rendering aid to sick or injured animals, immature wild animals found abandoned are transported to State licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators. Animals that are deemed public health or safety threats are removed from the population in a humane manner.”

Sen. Kelly said, “The upgraded, expanded shelter will serve Monroe well for decades to come. This is a wise investment to create a safer and more secure facility which will be an asset to the town and its residents. We congratulate Monroe on this significant award.”

“This grant will greatly benefit our community through this planned expansion and renovation,” said Rep. Tony Scott. “I want to thank the state for recognizing this need in our community. Our animal control officers do important work and I’m pleased we’ll be able to support their efforts with this funding.”

The grant is provided through the Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP), a state program managed by the Office of Policy and Management (OPM) that delivers grants to small towns for economic development, community conservation, and quality-of-life capital projects.

*Sen. Kelly represents the 21st District of Stratford, Shelton, Seymour, and Monroe.
