Sen. Henri Martin, local nurses and the Hospital Association celebrated the passage of legislation to protect healthcare workers against workplace violence.

House Bill 6741, a bill to help provide safety for healthcare workers, passed the House unanimously and was placed on consent in the Senate in the legislative session’s final hours.

With Gov. Lamont’s signature this past Friday, Martin said, the law will “represent the first step towards guaranteeing healthcare worker safety.”
He called it “one of the most significant hospital safety reforms in decades.”

The legislation will have The Department of Public Health develop a social media campaign and make public service announcements on its website and social media accounts, discouraging violence in healthcare settings.

Additionally, the Department of Public Health will raise awareness about grant opportunities administered by the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection to provide for hospital capital investments to enhance patient and employee safety. The grant opportunities will be included in their social media marketing campaign.
