Sen. Hwang to moderate June 22 coastal resiliency discussion in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD – Sen. Tony Hwang will moderate a panel presentation on solutions to protecting and preserving our coastline from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 22 at McKinley Elementary School on 60 Thompson Street in Fairfield in the All Purpose Room. (Event flyer attached.)

“The Atlantic hurricane season has begun, and our focus is protecting, preserving and possibly reclaiming buffer meadows and estuaries from erosion and development,” Sen. Hwang said. “This discussion will feature expert panelists who will review efforts to procure coastal resiliency and remediation federal and state grants.”

“This is a time-sensitive issue involving state and federal grant funding which can significantly help coastal communities like ours,” Sen. Hwang added.  “Our panelists will share incredible knowledge regarding the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels, and they have excellent advice on how we can successfully obtain these resiliency grants. We are all committed to protecting our communities, and I highly recommend that anyone who cares deeply about preserving our beautiful Connecticut coastline take the time to stop by the forum. Erosion and climate change knows no borders.  This is an issue which impacts all of us and we must continue working together to address it.”

Representatives from the Town of FairfieldAsh Creek Conservation Association, and the Connecticut Institute on Resiliency and Climate Adaptation will join Sen. Hwang as panelists. The panelists will discuss:

  • the restoration of estuaries and sea grasses
  • the deterioration of the Ash Creek Tidal Estuary due to rising sea levels, dredging and development
  • coordination and collaboration of resiliency efforts between Bridgeport and Fairfield
  • the potential replacement of water management gates
