Comptroller Scanlon & Senator Fazio Host Roundtable Discussing Legislation Promoting Expansion of Employment Opportunities to Promote Economic Growth
STAMFORD, CT- Comptroller Sean Scanlon, Senator Ryan Fazio (R-Greenwich), and Mayor Caroline Simmons (D- Stamford) hosted a community roundtable to discuss proposals passed this legislative session to foster growth throughout industries that provide alternative pathways to employment in Connecticut. Key stakeholders joined the elected officials to discuss eliminating specific degree requirements and licensing fees. The bill passed into law, S.B. 1124, will promote workforce development and economic growth throughout the state.
Senator Fazio began, “Our first bipartisan roundtable discussion on economic opportunity was a valuable one. I appreciate Comptroller Sean Scanlon co-hosting it with me and the attendance of Mayor Caroline Simmons, Rep. Rachel Khanna (D-Greenwich), and community leaders from Greenwich, Stamford, and New Canaan. The genesis of the roundtable was the passage of my bill, S.B. 1124, which directs the state to identify state jobs where we could effectively roll back college degree requirements and open opportunities to more workers.”
Fazio said, “We used the opportunity to discuss numerous strategies to create economic mobility in our state in a bipartisan fashion. I look forward to more roundtable discussions like this that will set the stage for us to create bipartisan policies for the next legislative term.”
S.B. 1124, An Act Concerning a Study of Pathways to State Employees, permits the Commissioner of Department Administrative Services to conduct a study of the following, but not limited to:
- The hiring practices of state agencies for positions in state service.
- The feasibility of eliminating requirements for college degrees for certain positions.
- The feasibility of establishing a program to provide applicants with alternative routes to employment rather than the college employment pipeline.
