Senator Seminara Applauds the Passage of Crucial Bear Management Legislation
HARTFORD- Senator Lisa Seminara (R-Avon) applauds the State Senate’s passage of S.B. 1148, and encourages House leadership to take up the legislation before conclusion of the legislative session on June 7. The proposed bill aims to enhance public safety by improving protections from black bears throughout the state. The legislation prohibits people from intentionally feeding a potentially dangerous animal on private land. In addition, the language allows a property owner to defend their crops, livestock and pets.
Senator Seminara said, “I applaud my Senate colleagues from the Environment Committee for proposing a collaborative solution to a critical issue for many families throughout our state. The language in S.B. 1148 will help address real public safety concerns in Connecticut while protecting wildlife. The safety of people, pets, livestock, and crops are a priority as we head towards the end of session, and I will continue to work with my house counterparts to pass this legislation.”
A push for this bill was heightened when an Avon woman was attacked by a bear while walking her dog in late April. After being voted out of the Senate 31-3, S.B. 1148 moves to the House where it awaits further action.
