Senator Seminara Applauds the Passage of Bill to Combat “Street Takeovers”, Racing and Illegal Roadway Activity

HARTFORD- Today, Senator Lisa Seminar (R-Avon) applauded the Senate’s passage of S.B. 1036, establishing a Greater Hartford Regional Law Enforcement Task Force to combat illegal roadway traffic activity. Senator Seminara joined the bipartisan legislative effort to investigate and deter organized groups of hundreds of people unlawfully operating motor vehicles, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles on public roadways.

Senator Seminara began, “On March 25th, more than 200 vehicles invaded the Town of Simsbury. Since that unacceptable incident, I have received dozens of complaints from constituents who have shared their concerns for their safety and their frustration for our police officers.”

“Over the past few years, public safety has been at the forefront of concerns for Connecticut residents and how the lack of consequences emboldens groups to participate in these potentially dangerous activities. I am encouraged that we can begin looking at this issue and create a law enforcement task force to address the safety and disturbance issues plaguing towns throughout our state. My hope is the concept passed by the Senate today is enacted in other communities in the future,” Seminara said.

The push comes after hundreds organized for street takeovers in Simsbury, Bristol, and, most recently, a violent takeover in Tolland. The task force will include state law enforcement officers and police from surrounding jurisdictions for a collaborative enforcement approach. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives and awaits further action.
