Proposals Address Oversight of COVID-19 Relief Funds, Federal Infrastructure Dollars

Today, State Sen. Jeff Gordon (R-Woodstock) joined Senate Republicans and local advocates to unveil a set of policy proposals called “A Better Way to an Accountable Connecticut” that inject transparency and sunlight into state government. Senator Gordon also emphasized the potential positive impacts of government transparency on the state’s job growth, transportation infrastructure, and the environment.

The plan, which can be viewed in detail here, includes initiatives to:

  • Increase oversight and transparency of federal COVID-19 relief funds
  • Establish accountability in overseeing federal infrastructure dollars
  • Establish a Chief Accountability Officer to increase oversight of state, quasi-public, and municipal activities

Senator Gordon said, “People in our district hold themselves accountable every day. To their families; to their careers. We’re calling for our state government to have the same accountability in its management of our hard-earned tax dollars. Recent cases of fraud and abuse in West Haven and questions about whether funds are reaching the communities most in need have raised serious concerns about the state’s ability to effectively use these funds.

“As Connecticut receives an historic amount of federal funding for relief and investment, it’s critical that proper safeguards are put in place to ensure that every taxpayer dollar is respected and accounted for. By establishing better transparency, we can restore public confidence and ensure that these funds are being used for their intended purpose.”
