Proposals Address Oversight of COVID-19 Relief Funds, Federal Infrastructure Dollars

Today, Deputy Senate Republican Leader Paul Cicarella (R-North Haven) joined Senate Republicans and local advocates to unveil a set of policy proposals called “A Better Way to an Accountable Connecticut” that inject transparency and sunlight into state government. Senator Cicarella also emphasized the potential positive impacts of government transparency on the state’s job growth, transportation infrastructure, and the environment.

The plan, which can be viewed in detail here, includes initiatives to:

  • Increase oversight and transparency of federal COVID-19 relief funds
  • Establish accountability in overseeing federal infrastructure dollars
  • Establish a Chief Accountability Officer to increase oversight of state, quasi-public, and municipal activities

Senator Cicarella said, “Connecticut taxpayers deserve better from their government. We cannot allow federal funding to be squandered without accountability and oversight. Connecticut families hold themselves accountable every day to manage their budgets. Connecticut government should do the same.

“Our proposals will bring much-needed transparency and efficiency to state projects, and ensure that taxpayer dollars are being spent wisely. As a state, we must prioritize job creation, infrastructure improvements, and environmental stewardship. We urge our colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support our efforts to make Connecticut a better place for all. We must respect the sacrifices of all taxpayers.”
