Sen. Hwang Tours Career Resources’ “The Bridge on Main”;
Touts Benefits of Comprehensive Incarcerated Re-Entry Services
“This building will positively change lives and reduce recidivism.”
BRIDGEPORT – Sen. Tony Hwang on Jan. 31 joined Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, state legislators and re-entry leaders in downtown Bridgeport for a tour of The Bridge on Main: a comprehensive reentry support project of Career Resources Inc.
Last year, Career Resources bought the commercial building, which has been vacant for the past 25 years, for $1.1 million with financial assistance from philanthropist Mimi Sternlicht of Greenwich.
“The name, The Bridge on Main, says it all about this initiative,” Sen. Hwang said. “It gives those who were formerly incarcerated a bridge back to Main Street. Every day, the team at Career Resources strives to improve individuals’ lives through the dignity of work and constant self-improvement. I am so honored and proud to tour this construction site and envision this planned facility on Bridgeport’s Main Street. On this site, a consortium of nonprofit agency workers will help to reintegrate people back into society.”
Last year, Sen. Hwang and Career Resources released a report: the State of Reentry. The report’s findings helped to address the needs of the state’s 10 reentry roundtables/agencies for actionable data on the populations they serve in their regions.
Sen. Hwang and Career Resources will release the 2023 State of Reentry report on Feb. 15 in Hartford.
“That 2022 report gave us a clear picture of why we need robust, evidence-based reentry services in our state,” Sen. Hwang said. “Today’s tour of The Bridge on Main was illuminating, and I look forward to re-visiting this site when the work is done. This building will positively change lives and reduce recidivism. This building – and its staff – will help to get Connecticut residents back to work.”
