Connecticut Farmers Now Eligible to Apply for Emergency Loans as Drought Continues

August 26, 2022

Assistance now available as feds declare New London county a natural disaster area.

My heart is with our local farmers who are struggling with a severe drought resulting in production losses and putting further strain on our agricultural industry and the jobs our local farms support. I want to make our communities and local farmers aware of the following federal assistance that has now been made available.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture today designated New London and Windham Counties as primary natural disaster areas due to drought. The designation makes farm operators in primary counties and those counties contiguous to such primary counties eligible to be considered for certain assistance from the Farm Service Agency (FSA), provided eligibility requirements are met. This assistance includes FSA emergency loans.

Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of the declaration to apply for emergency loans. FSA considers each emergency loan application on its own merits, taking into account the extent of production losses on the farm and the security and repayment of the operator.

Farmers interested in applying for the assistance must contact their local Farm Service Agency office.

To all our local farmers and the people who work to feed, clothe and fuel our families, thank you for all you do, especially in these difficult times. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have further questions about the help available.
