Sen. Somers, Mayor Hedrick Applaud Passage of State $ to Replace Shore Avenue Seawall in Groton

Sen. Heather Somers and City of Groton Mayor Keith Hedrick today applauded the State Bond Commission’s passage of $2.7 million for the replacement of the seawall along Shore Avenue in Groton.

“Hard work and teamwork pays off, and the approval of this funding is an excellent example,” Sen. Somers said. “I was honored to work closely with Mayor Hedrick to help get this funding placed on the state bond commission’s agenda.”

Work includes pre and post construction assessments of adjacent eel grass beds; installing water handling cofferdam system to allow removal of existing seawall; and installing upland dewatering area for duration of the project.

“I want to personally thank Sen. Somers for her tenacity and determination in her work on behalf of the City of Groton. Her experience, leadership and teamwork is how we received this critical funding through the Bond Commission,” said Mayor Hedrick. “Once Sen. Somers and I had a conversation as to the urgency of this situation for the City, she offered to go right to work. From that point on, we were speaking with one environmentally focused voice on behalf of the community. This is exactly why the experience and relationships of knowing how to make things happen in Hartford is so critical. The collaboration and teamwork is paying dividends to our residents, public safety, public health and our finances with $2.7 million coming to the City.”

“I am so thankful that we got this done for Groton, and special thanks to the governor’s office for recognizing this pressing need and acting swiftly on our request,” Sen. Somers added. “Bottom line? Keep working hard, stay determined, and good things happen.”
