Sen. Kelly Named Legislative Champion for Oral Health
February 18, 2022Recognized During National Children’s Dental Health Month for Efforts to Extend Dental Coverage to Dependents up to Age 26
The Connecticut Oral Health Initiative has named Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford) a 2022 Legislative Champion for Oral Health.
The award recognizes Senator Kelly’s work as a champion for oral health access in Connecticut, and in particular his support and success in passing legislation to extend dental coverage to dependents up to age 26 through their family dental plans.
Public Act 21-149 allows children and stepchildren to retain dental and vision insurance coverage under their parents’ insurance policies until age 26.
The award was announced during the Oral Health Initiative’s Annual Meeting earlier this month.
February also marks National Children’s Dental Health Month. Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health.
“The bill expanding dental coverage through age 26 is so important because it enables our children to access quality and affordable health care. There’s nothing more important than health care for our children,” said Sen. Kelly.
“The mouth is the gateway to health. There are known connections between poor oral health and overall health including and specifically cardiovascular disease and the spread of bacteria to other parts of your body. Good oral health is very important for overall health. The new state law is a common-sense solution to increase access for our children. More work lies ahead to continue working to make health care more accessible and affordable for everyone.”
