Sen. Somers Honored for Advocacy on Behalf of Senior Housing and Healthcare

Sen. Heather Somers on Sep. 10 was named a recipient of this year’s “Fairview Medal”.
Groton-based Fairview is the only non-profit skilled nursing facility and independent living community in the region. The Fairview Medal is presented to an individual who has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to Fairview over an extended amount of time.

“To receive this medal is quite an honor, and I am grateful to everyone at Fairview for this recognition,” Sen. Somers said.  “Fairview has been committed to giving exceptional care since its doors opened more than 125 years ago. Fairview does a wonderful job providing housing and healthcare to the elderly. I do my best to be a strong voice for seniors and quality health care at our State Capitol, and I view Fairview as a strong partner in this ongoing work.”

Sen. Somers serves as Ranking Member of the legislature’s Public Health Committee, which has cognizance of all programs and matters relating to the Department of Public Health and the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

In 2019, Sen. Somers was named a “Champion of Elder Care” by the Connecticut Association of Health Care Facilities/Connecticut Center for Assisted Living in recognition of her “fierce, intelligent and outstanding leadership on behalf of Connecticut’s skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities, their employees and especially the residents they care for.”

Sen. Somers served on the state’s Covid Vaccine Advisory Committee and as Chairperson of the Vaccine Communications Subcommittee.
