Sen. Somers a “consistent champion” for CT’s fishing industry

(Letter to the Editor in The Day of New London)

Great job by Day’s Joe Wojtas and state Sen. Somers

Thank you to The Day and Staff Writer Joe Wojtas for the compelling “Fish Tales” series featuring southeastern Connecticut’s fishing industry.

Fishing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

We are fortunate to have a state senator, Heather Somers, who has been a consistent champion for the industry.

In 2019, Heather introduced legislation to ease regulations preventing local commercial fishermen from landing catches in multiple states on the same trip. Her bill, which sought to improve efficiency and safety for boats based at the Stonington Town Dock and throughout the region, is now state law.

Our state lawmakers, led by Somers, must continue to do all they can to support the men and women of Connecticut’s fishing industry.

In the meantime, The Day’s “Fish Tales” series should be required reading at the State Capitol.
