Sen. Cicarella Applauds House Passage of Tristan’s Law
May 20, 2021Bill to increase safety measures on ice cream trucks passes House, awaits Gov. Lamont’s signature
State Sen. Paul Cicarella (R-North Haven) applauded the House of Representatives passage on consent of S.B. 608, which seeks to increase safety for children when buying frozen treats from frozen dessert trucks. The bill has bipartisan support from local lawmakers and was written in response to a fatal incident in Cheshire involving a Wallingford child last summer. The Senate passed the bill, introduced by Sen. Cicarella, in April.
“Thank you to my colleagues in the House for moving this important bill forward across party lines. The warm weather is here and it’s important that we put added safety measures in place to protect kids in our community so they can enjoy one of the season’s simple pleasures: a frozen treat from an ice cream truck. I’m happy that we can honor Tristan’s memory this way and hopefully prevent incidents like this from happening again. This is not only for Tristan and his family, but also for the other kids who’ve been permanently injured in similar incidents across the state over the years. No child or family should have to suffer like this. I’d also like to thank Tristan’s parents for their incredible bravery and advocacy to finally get this bill on the Governor’s desk. We look forward to his signature,” said Sen. Cicarella.
The bill now awaits Gov. Ned Lamont’s signature to become law. Sen. Cicarella has advocated for this bill in support of a Wallingford family whose son Tristan Barhorst, 10, was killed in a June 2020 incident.
