Sens. Kelly & Hwang Detail CT Senate Republican Affordable Health Care Plan

HARTFORD – Today Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford) and Senator Tony Hwang (R-Fairfield), Ranking Member on the Insurance and Real Estate Committee detailed the Connecticut Senate Republican plan for affordable health care. Their proposal, Senate Bill 1006, will have a public hearing on Thursday, March 11 at 12:00 PM.

At today’s press conference, Sen. Kelly emphasized that unlike proposals to create a government-run health care system with a “public option,” the Senate Republican plan achieves the goals of making quality care more affordable for all people, while also protecting jobs in Connecticut’s flagship insurance industry.

“Our plan, something that we’ve been putting forward for a number of years now, is a commonsense, pro-jobs, pro-family, pro-Connecticut plan that fulfills the promises made with regard to the Affordable Care Act; and that is that we would have affordable health care, there would be improved quality and greater access. And our bill can do all of those things,” said Sen. Kelly. “The public option is designed to be disruptive to the insurance industry. Our plan works to fix the current system, so you can keep your insurance, keep your doctor, and still get savings.”

“Republicans and Democrats all agree that health care is far too expensive and at this current rate unsustainable,” said Sen. Hwang. “I think we simply differ on how we have solutions.”

Sen. Hwang said there are three proposals before the legislature: a public option proposal that would create a state managed health care system, the Governor’s proposal, and the Senate Republican plan. He urged lawmakers to work together on health care issues and consider the value of the CT Senate Republican proposal at Thursday’s public hearing.

Sen. Kelly also said a ‘public-option’ would go into direct competition with Connecticut’s insurance industry costing jobs and have an adverse impact on the middle class.

“However, [the CT Senate Republican] health care proposal not only will deliver on the promises of affordability, quality and access, but we also remain the insurance capital of the world and keep the good paying middle class jobs in the insurance industry that actually enable families to pay a mortgage, educate their kids and make our communities where we live the great place it is to live work and raise a family. That’s our focus,” said Kelly.
